Review: Wonderland, Alice's Rock & Roll Adventure

Ariana Burks as Alice in Wonderland, Alice's Rock & Roll Adventure Photo by Charles Osgood

Pe'Tehn, a preschooler at Ferguson School, saw the April 24 performance of "Wonderland, Alice's Rock & Roll Adventure." Her review is below.

The play was fun. I liked to see and hear them play the guitars. I liked the Rock & Roll music they played. I liked how they sung.  My favorite character was Alice. I liked her because she smiled a lot and she had a beautiful blue dress. I liked the rabbit and the jabberwocky because they played their instruments well. I liked the ladies dressed up as red roses because they were cute and I like red roses. It was an awesome play.

Performances continue through May 24.
Tickets are $10-$38.

StudentsXpress SPEAKS Success!

What a great time we had at StudentsXpress SPEAKS Thursday night! I was so delighted to see so many families and friends come out to support the students as they spoke on stage about "What I'm Into Now." It was a great turnout, and the students were fantastic. I was so impressed with the way they handled themselves on stage.

As I've said before, it's always great to see the students who write for the magazine, and this was a wonderful night of students from different schools coming together. The speakers represented Alcott, Blaine, Diego, Hamilton, Patrick Henry, Lawndale, Nettelhorst, Talcott and Waters schools. Thank you so much to the students and families who came out from near and far to make this evening what it was. I look forward to having more StudentsXpress SPEAKS nights in the future to celebrate our students!

Jaleel, Hamilton Elementary

What a cool thing for a kid to be into. I can't wait to hear Jaleel speak about it himself at StudentsXpress SPEAKS night tomorrow....

Hello, my name is Jaleel and I like to plant things. Some of the things I like to plant are tomatoes, beans, peas and all cactus and succulents. If you go to my house you would think it would be full of plants but instead I have a lot of science stuff but a few plants but mostly science.

Plants are addicting and
Lovable and
Awesome I
Never want them
To leave my
Sight

Kai C., Waters Elementary

I am interested in Star Wars. I am interested in Star Wars because it is the first movie that showed space and all of the stars. If you can go into space I would fly my starship all the time. Also it has space battles, light saber duels and gun battles. The most common battles are the ones with clones and droids. Most clone and droid battles have one Jedi in them. Jedi should only use a light saber in battle. In Star Wars you will see a lot of monsters. The Millennium Falcon has been in many battles. That’s why I am interested in Star Wars.

Jazmine, Brownell and Jasihyia, Lawndale

These two girls submitted their work through WITS (Working In The Schools), a wonderful organization that is now participating with StudentsXpress.
Though I couldn't fit everyone's writing and artwork into the magazine, I love what they each had to say and wanted to share them here. I hope they will be able to share them in their own voices at our upcoming StudentsXpress SPEAKS! night.

I sing on my mom’s birthday because I want to show her how special she is. It’s important because it’s my talent and it is in my family history. I have relatives who sing and dance. Singing helps me calm and makes me free.
—Jazmine S., Brownell

I love music because you can dance, sing, it makes you happy and it’s fun. Some of the artists I like are Ariana Grande, Sam Smith, Katy Perry, Destiny Child, Miley Cyrus, Megan Trainor. Sam Smith’s song “Stay With Me” is kind of sad but it’s beautiful and I love it. Megan Trainor’s song “All About That Bass” is about your weight and it makes  you feel like you’re big and beautiful.

Olivia, Patrick Henry Elementary

Hi. My name is Olivia. I am 8 years old. What I am into right now is fashion. I like fashion because it doesn’t have to be plain or regular, it can be whatever you want it to be. I like hip-hop style and cool punk. I have shake it up high tops that my mom bought me. I also have a shirt that hangs off my shoulder and also has French words on it. I like lots of jewelry. I have like a thousand necklaces and lots of earrings. I even have a fake tiara that I got from a happy meal. I love glasses. Glasses make  you look fun, silly and cool. I think that everyone in the world should wear glasses because it would make them feel unique. The last thing I like is long hair. This is what I’m into now.

Cardale R., Jenner Elementary

My mom is the best thing in my life. She supports me 100% and I appreciate everything she does for me and my brother. She teaches us right from wrong, how to be kind and respectful to others and to be proud of who we are. My father is also a great man. He teaches us to respect women and to treat them like queens, to hold open doors for them and to always make sure to take out the trash. He says that girls and women should always be clean and the guys take care of the garbage.

My mom always takes care of me when I get sick and I get sick a lot. She comes to my school to check on me, bring my medicine, and to check my blood sugar. I have a nurse at school but my mom still has to know for herself that I am ok. When I grow up I am going to be rich so I can take care of my mom and dad like they take care of me and my brother. I love my parents.

Angelica M., Talcott Fine Arts and Museum Academy

My pop culture is art. My favorite thing to draw is chibi and anime. If you don’t know what chibi is, chibi is a really cute way of drawing something. Anime is a complex and detailed drawing. For example Dragon Ball Z is anime. Right now I’m working on anime eyes.
The reason why I love art is that you get to be creative, and also show your personality and emotions. Another thing is that it’s calming. The reason why art is so important is because when I was younger I always loved watching my sisters show their artistic side.
When I grow up I want to be a marine biologist who draws the sea creatures. I hope I can crate a book with all my notes and drawings of the sea creatures.

Leonard N., Nettelhorst Elementary

“What I’m into now” is basketball and soccer because it shows who I am through others' opinion. These sports represent a big portion of my identity. When I play basketball and soccer it makes me feel like I am a different person. I am a bigger fan of soccer but even though I like soccer and basketball I figure a way to combine both to have an equal amount of interest into them.
Basketball is a way for me to feel energetic and have fun while trying my hardest at games, practice, etc. Basketball can tell a lot from me. It can tell that I love sports, I try my hardest or I like to be doing my best at any point in time. When I watch basketball it can teach me a lot of new tricks, can show me how to do something or just for entertainment. Basketball and soccer, for me are completely different feelings toward each sport.
For soccer I am not a very big fan in watching it but I do watch it here and there. I watch soccer mostly to learn new tricks and can see how I should play myself or with a team. When playing soccer I always try my hardest because it can teach me new tricks just by playing or I could get better at soccer. Soccer and basketball have a similar feeling to me. The way I feel for soccer and basketball have one thing in common: I try my hardest in each sport.
In conclusion, basketball and soccer have an impact on my life. It represents my identity. These sports are two of my favorite sports. Soccer and basketball can change my whole thoughts on the world because these sports can show that not everything is about injuries—it’s just about having fun outside or inside. Basketball and soccer are two of my favorite outdoor activities. This is “What I’m Into Now.”

What I’m into now is family. It’s family because it makes me happy knowing that I can have them right by my side all the time. I’m enjoying something right now and it is friends because they’re just like family to me and they are also by my side. My favorite book right now is “Annie.” It’s a really good book. The latest movie is “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.” I liked the first one. The greatest movie is “The Book of Life.” It was funny, sad and cool. I’m loving the song “Take Me to Church.” There is a great beat in it and great lyrics in it. I’m loving the show “Every Witch Way.” There’s cool magic in there. I love the clothes at Target. Target has everything I need! I’m loving my hobby, which is dancing. Dancing makes me feel alive! My favorite sport is gymnastics. It also makes me feel alive. My best class is science. It is fun to learn about bones. That’s what I’m into RIGHT NOW!

Students of Chicago: Brianna F.

STUDENTS OF CHICAGO

What I am enjoying at the moment is playing with my friends because they make me laugh; they make me happy too. Also my favorite book is “I Survive” because the book tells me 5 epic stories from a long time ago or not too long ago. My latest and greatest movie I’ve seen is “The Book of Life” because it talks about my heritage and the Day of the Dead. What I am loving in music right now is hip-hop because I love the beat and the rhythm too. Also the TV show that I love right now is “I Didn’t Do It” because it is funny and crazy. What I’m loving right now in fashion is gym shoes because they’re comfortable and great for running too. Also, my favorite sport that I’m loving is soccer because it is challenging, exciting, and fun. My favorite classes are Science and Reading.

Review/Interviews: The American Library Association's Annual Midwinter Conference

The American Library Association’s annual midwinter conference was alluring from the start.
But after meeting and interviewing amazing authors such as Kari Kampakis, Lisa T Bergren, and Sally M. Walker
I’m convinced that the convention is made from magic. Unknown and undefined magic, because it was absolutely
beautiful, and I’m sure I will never forget my experience there. Everything flowed so easily, getting from the booths
to the food was simple. Yes, there was a lot of walking, and as a person who doesn’t normally participate in any
form of athletics for fun, I can firmly say that my legs were extremely tired once I got home. But after waking up and
being surrounded by the largest stack of books I have ever seen, my notes full of responses from questions authors
answered, and my memories of the full day before, the entire experience was worth it. So, on to the interviews!

A1-Sally M. Walker
A2-Kari Kampakis
A3-Lisa T Bergren

Q: What is the title and genre of your book?
A1: The title of my book is Ghost Walls, and it’s genre is nonfiction.
A2: My book’s title is 10 Ultimate Truths Girls Should Know, and I consider the genre it to be nonfiction teen.
A3: The title is Remnants: Season of Fire, and the genre is a mix of dystopian/fantasy/suspense.

Q: How important do you consider libraries to be to today’s society? Do you have any memories associated
with them?
A1: I believe that libraries are an undeniably important asset to today’s society. I remember being very young and
going to the library three times a week, because I’d finish the books early and couldn’t wait to get another one.
A2: Libraries are a basic necessity to our lives, I don’t think that the world would be the same without them.
My love for reading started with my love for the library at an early age.
A3: All libraries are very important to children all over the world. They provide learning and knowledge to those
who can’t always afford it. I always was fond for libraries and how happy it made me to bring books home from them.

Q: Do you consider eBooks, graphic novels, and audiobooks to be books?
A1: Yes, I do. I actually usually listen to audiobooks a lot, because of their mobility. I can’t really focus on eBooks
when reading them, because the screen and the text feels distracting somehow. For many, eBooks, audiobooks,
or graphic novels are easier for them to read than the normal book. The more people who start reading, the better!
A2: I do think that they’re books, considering the fact that I usually read them as easily as any other real book.
I usually prefer to read fiction eBooks, and nonfiction real books.
A3: I believe that they are books, just different types of books, for different types of people. I occasionally listen/read
them when I’m in the mood for something that I don’t usually read.

Q: What’s your favorite genre of fiction you enjoy reading?
A1: I especially love mysteries, specifically Sherlock Holmes. Though I do love BBC’s Sherlock and CBS’s Elementary.
A2: I just love reading women’s contemporary, because the character’s emotions feel so realistic and relatable to
mine in many ways.
A3: I read everything, and I don’t know how to choose! All genres have an amazing book that I’ve loved reading.

Q; Who are you favorite authors?
A1: I love JK Rowling, Suzanne Collins, and Rick Riordan. Their characters are amazing!
A2: C. S. Lewis, Patti Rallahan Henry, John Green, and Sophie Kinsella are my absolute favorites.
A3: I love John Green, Rainbow Rowell, and Leigh Bardugo. It’s so easy to get sucked into their stories.

Q: What do you like and dislike about YA?
A1: I like the new selection of ghost stories. I’m kind of tired of all the new dystopians, I feel like there’s so much more
to this generation’s genre than just dystopian novels.
A2: I like the great new authors, such as John Green, whom I really enjoy reading. I dislike how dark they’re getting.
There are children reading these books, and it’s important to acknowledge that.
A3: I like that YA addresses issues that people of all ages are suffering from. I dislike how often, in this genre, children
are without a loving family to help them through their problems.

Q: What’s your favorite style of writing?
A1: I like, what I call, narrative nonfiction, which are nonfiction books that tell a story.
A2: I really love christian nonfiction, because it’s interesting to be able to connect to another person who has the same
religion that I do.
A3: I love fast-paced, suspenseful fiction.

Q: What book are you currently reading?
A1: I’m reading Rook by Sharon Cameron.
A2: I’m almost finished with Home Is Where My People Are, by Sophie Hudson. And I’m about to start This Present
Darkness, by Frank E. Peretti.
A3: I’m reading Rose Garden, by Susanna Kearsley.

So, the ALA was great. I’d recommend that everyone sees some of the exhibits the next time they come up.

This is Awesome!

The reason I haven't posted student work for a few days is because I was busy preparing a pitch to present last night for an AWESOME foundation grant. Three projects were chosen to pitch their ideas last night at the Next Door Cafe in Lincoln Park.

Deborah Davis, Wentworth Elementary Art Teacher, came along with me. She spoke about the students she teaches in the West Englewood neighborhood. My idea was to work with her to create a publication for Wentworth students about the issue of violence in their neighborhood. Students would submit artwork and writing about how violence has impacted their lives and what they can do to help their community.

Even though I'm terrible at speaking publicly, we won the grant! Special thanks to Deborah for her wonderful words, and for the student work she brought me, which I turned into a powerful slideshow (above—I apologize if blurry) to play while she spoke. What you see and read in the slideshow was from one first grade class that she teaches. Their stories and pictures are shocking and sad.

Today, I'm thinking about focusing more on the positive for this book and less on the violence in the students' lives. They need more positive messages and encouragement, so I'm thinking the book might focus more on their hopes, dreams and goals. Deborah and I will be collaborating to get this done by the end of the school year. We're both very excited for the opportunity, thanks to the AWESOME foundation!

Students of Chicago: Natalia R.

STUDENTS OF CHICAGO

I'm into rap and alternative music. I love Kanye's old songs and bands like Panic! At the Disco, My Chemical Romance and Green Day. Their songs have deep meaning and have a catchy tune. They help me calm down and some of their songs are chill and make me focused.

Students of Chicago

After talking to my mom the other day about how uplifting the web site "Humans of New York" is, I realized it's kind of similar to the submissions I read for StudentsXpress—a little snippet of life in the city, told through one person's eyes. It's really neat to get to know Chicago's youth just a little bit through their writing and drawings.
So, now, as a spinoff of StudentsXpress, I present....
STUDENTS OF CHICAGO

Right now I'm really into famous people. I'm going to talk about Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan is a basketball player, a baseball player and a basketball coach. I like Michael Jordan because I'm a basketball player myself and I want to be as good as him. And I'm going to work hard so I can be like him.

What Sunshine is Into Now

Right Now, I’m Into The Hunger Games.

The Hunger Games is basically a serious game of last man standing, but instead of getting out, you die. Hunger Games is a trilogy that is really exhilarating. Every move comes on as a surprise. It takes place in a dystopia where most districts are poor. The Capitol is harsh on everyone and the most common consequences are death or a method of receiving a severe scar. But no matter what happens, you can never wait for what comes next. The way the Hunger Games works is each of the 12 districts sends out two 11-18 year old tributes, and they kill each other off until the last child remains. I know that it sounds gross and scary, because that is how I thought of it before I read it. But when I finally got the book, I couldn’t put it back down. Instead of thinking it was gory, I just imagined it as a big football game that takes you emotionally. The death of a loved character is like your team losing. You’re eager for a creative revenge. The books are very intriguing. You always want more to read. Finishing the last book brings joy for knowing all the information but devastation, for there is nothing left to read.

What The Kids Are Into Now

The Spring issue of StudentsXpress is "What I'm Into Now." I've been receiving so many great submissions from the students that there is no way they will all fit into the publication. It's so hard to include some but not others, I've decided to start posting them here....daily. The plan is to post at least one a day, leading up to the publication date in March. Then, I'll continue to post them until I start receiving our Summer submissions.

I'm so happy to have WITS (Working In The Schools) participating this year with StudentsXpress. I'm in the process of inputting their submissions, and I thought I'd start with one I just typed in. It's a great way to kick off "What I'm Into Now." I hope you like it, and I hope you return daily to see what else gets posted. I love reading what these students have to say, and I think you might enjoy it too!

Jaylan M.
There was a girl named Jayden Elizabeath Olivia Murie. Jayden had recently moved from North Carolina to Chicago because her mother had wanted a better life. Jayden was the 3rd oldest. There were Amelia and Mureil, Jayden and Alieah. Jayden had no friends and often read a book called “Dork Diaries” and watched a show called “A.N.T. Farm." She listened to music by BeyoncĂ©, a successful R&B artist. She liked all of these popular things because she wanted to have a lot in common with the girls at her new school. After all of her effort, the girls still were intimidated by her as she was smart and a very good reader. There was one girl in class, Hellean; Jayden and her had a lot in common. Every day they bonded over their love of BeyoncĂ©, Annie, and Jordans. Jayden was so happy pop culture brought her and Hellean together.
